History of New Beginnings Family Center
Jerry Setser and his wife Rita are longtime residents of Decatur. Jerry has owned and operated several businesses and Rita, a homemaker, has worked as a volunteer with many local organizations. In March of 1980, Jerry recommitted his life to the Lord Jesus Christ and began working in the local church.
From 1993-95, Rita and Jerry attended and graduated from Rhema Bible Training Center in Tulsa Oklahoma. Over the years they have made several trips to the former Soviet Union to share the Gospel. They have also ministered in South Africa, the Philippines and Jamaica.
In 2003, the Lord began to impress on Jerry a need to pioneer a church and that's when New Beginnings Faith Center began. For the first 7 months, services were held at a local hotel with 17 people full of passion and a desire to see Jesus demonstrated in an authentic way in Decatur and the surrounding areas. Our motto was ‘Making a difference in the things that matter most.’ Pastor Jerry’s desire was to build a strong spiritual foundation in the lives of the people. In 2004, NBFC purchased the buildings that are being used today.
By 2009, church attendance had grown to approximately 80 people. It was around this time that the Lord began to move on Pastor Jerry's heart about stepping aside and bringing in a new pastor for NBFC.
Geoff Smith and wife Ruth moved to Decatur from England in the fall of 2009. Geoff assumed the position of Associate Pastor at New Beginnings Faith Center until January 2010, when he became the Senior Pastor. They both attended and graduated from Rhema Bible Training Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Later that year the name of the Church was changed to New Beginnings Family Center with a new motto ‘Loving God, Loving people, Making a Difference Where it Matter the Most.’ The vision of the newly renamed New Beginnings Family Center did not change. The vision is ‘to share the Good News of the Gospel with the lost, to train and edify the saved, to minister to the needs of others, to support other ministries around the world and to be a light for Jesus in this community.’
Pastor Geoff and Ruth worked for Christian television in Europe and attended four years of Bible College in Canada and in the USA. They have traveled and ministered in Indonesia, Southeast Asia and China. Pastor Geoff received his M.A in Missional Leadership in June 2010.
The Smith’s passion is to love, encourage and equip people to live the life that God has for them and extend an arm of love and friendship to a lost and dying world.
Under the direction of the Lord, Geoff and Ruth moved to pastor a church near Boston, Massachusetts in February 2014.
Pastor Jason Cooksey and his family moved to Decatur from Oxford, Mississippi, in early June, 2014 to become the senior pastor at New Beginnings Family Center. Before coming to New Beginnings he served as Senior Pastor of Desoto Woods Church in Southaven, Mississippi from 2008- 2014. He studied Theology and graduated from Christian Life School of Theology in Columbus, Georgia.
Pastor Jason's emphasis is on discipleship, and his greatest desire is to see God’s people experience all the freedom and blessings made available to them as is revealed by God’s Word.
The Cooksey's prayer is that you experience the Lord’s presence in a life-changing way and are impacted tremendously through the anointed teaching from God’s Word.
Jason and Christine moved to pastor a church in Pennsylvania in August 2017.
